I have actually gone to job fairs to talk to the businesses about my informational research business. It is something many recruiters and industry people who attend get blown away by. It is a different approach as everyone there is looking for a specific job. People talk with me as I am not looking to be part of their payroll. But may indeed offer something the company needs on a short term.

Attending any startup conference is great. A key bit of advice is getting your elevator pitch down. Even though I talk with startups who do need help. I will try to get to speak with one of the panel speakers. If there is a panel discussion, ask open ended questions. In most cases the panelist will want to talk with you later about the subject you brought up.

I have created a fold over palm card. Larger than a business card but can slip in a pocket or wallet. they are like snapshots of your website and go over very well.

After the end of a conference or event, invest in thank you cards. Never underestimate the power of the thank you card. I have made many connections by sending out a very simple card, that states, “Thank you your valuable time at said conference.” Do not use this tactic to solicit your work. It is to show appreciation and thanks for the vital information these successful people gave. People remember thank you cards.
